Breve análisis de las novelas nominadas a los Premios Nebula

Hace un par de semanas se anunciaron los nominados a los Premios Nebula de este año. Algunas personas me han preguntado por mi opinión sobre la lista y por eso he querido escribir un pequeño análisis con mis impresiones sobre las obras finalistas en la categoría de novela.

En primer lugar, he de decir que he leído seis de los siete libros nominados (todos menos Amberlough) y que todos ellos me parecen, cuando menos, notables. En ese sentido, creo que la lista es sólida y un reflejo más o menos fiel de lo que dio de sí el año 2017... salvo por algunas ausencias de las que hablaré más adelante. Podríamos decir que son todos los que están pero no están todos lo que son. 

Empecemos por The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, de Theodora Goss, que aún habiéndome gustado, es mi "menos favorito" de los seis. Se trata de una novela con buenas virtudes: es ágil, presenta algunos juegos metaliterarios muy bien llevados por la autora y consigue hacer algo original en el muy trillado género de los pastiches holmesianos. Por supuesto, su principal virtud es poner en primer plano personajes femeninos de obras muy conocidas (El extraño caso del Dr. Jekyll y Mr Hyde, La isla del Dr. Moreau, La hija de Rappaccini...) y darle un tono claramente reivindicativo y fresco. Sin embargo, la historia en sí misma, el misterio que se investiga, se queda un poco corto. Puesto que parece que es sólo la primera entrega de una serie, es posible que este aspecto evolucione para bien en siguientes volúmenes, puesto que aquí el grueso del libro se "pierde" en la presentación de los personajes.

Autonomous es otro caso curioso, puesto que hace algunas cosas muy bien y otras se quedan simplemente a medias. Sin duda, esta obra de Annalee Newitz es de las que más se ha hablado en el último año y es firme candidata a todos los premios y tiene razones para ello. El tratamiento de temas como la inteligencia artificial o el diseño, comercialización y pirateo de medicamentos están muy bien presentados y colaboran para dar lugar a un atractivo worldbuilding. Los personajes también son muy interesantes, sobre todo el robot Paladin y la hacker Jack. Lo que no me ha gustado tanto es la separación de las dos tramas paralelas y los altibajos en ritmo de alguna de ellas. Aún así, una novela recomendable. 

Poco puedo de The Stone Sky, de N.K. Jemisin, más allá de que es una conclusión más que digna para una trilogía que ya es casi un clásico de la ciencia ficción y la fantasía modernas. Aunque está un peldaño por debajo de la excelente The Fifth Season, la inclusión de nuevas perspectivas y nuevos personajes le sienta muy bien a la historia. Vista la popularidad de la serie, supongo que es la máxima candidata en cualquier premio en el que sea nominada. 

Jade City, de Fonda Lee, fue una muy grata sorpresa, como ya comenté en mi reseña del libro. La mezcla de fantasía urbana, artes marciales e historia de la mafia está perfectamente conseguida y el tono del libro es prácticamente perfecto. Pocas pegas le puedo poner a un libro tan sólido como este y me alegro de que se haya visto recompensado con una nominación para los Nebula. Por suerte, se podrá leer en castellano dentro de poco de la mano de la editorial Insólita.

En los últimos años ha habido varios libros que han recuperado dos temas clásicos de la ciencia ficción como son las naves generacionales y la clonación, pero el mejor de ellos es, para mí sin duda alguna, Six Wakes, de Mur Lafferty. No sólo es interesante el misterio que se plantea durante la misión en sí, sino sobre todo el trasfondo que se va desvelando con flashbacks sobre la historia de los distintos personajes y lo que eso nos deja entrever de los cambios sociales provocados por la aparición de los clones. Una muy buena novela de CF, opinión que comparte también Antonio Díaz.  

Finalmente, mi obra favorita de entre las nominadas, solo un poquito por encima de Six Wakes, es Spoonbenders, de Daryl Gregory, recientemente publicada en español por Blackie Books como La extraordinaria familia Telemacus. No me extenderé mucho sobre este libro puesto que ya canté sus alabanzas en mi reseña, pero si no conocéis aún al autor es un maravilloso lugar por donde empezar con su obra (y esperemos que pronto tengamos también la magnífica Raising Stony Mayhall en castellano). Inteligente, divertida, graciosa, sorprendente y llena de personajes entrañables. ¿Qué más puedo añadir?

No puedo terminar esta reflexión sin hablar, como anunciaba al principio, de las ausencias en esta lista de nominados. Es cierto, como he intentado reflejar en los párrafos anteriores, que la selección es sólida y está plagada de buenas obras. Pero en un año en que Ada Palmer publicó no una sino dos excelentes novelas (Seven Surrenders y The Will to Battle) me sorprende tanto como me entristece no ver su nombre entre los finalistas. Especialmente, Seven Surrenders me parece una obra maestra y pienso que, simplemente, habría que cancelar todos los premios del año y dárselos directamente a Palmer. Pero bueno, lo que hay es lo que hay y es bastante bueno, así que más vale celebrarlo y disfrutar de ello, ¿no?

Novedad: Nebula Awards Showcase 2015, antología editada por Greg Bear

Hoy se pone a la venta Nebula Awards Showcase 2015, una antología editada por Greg Bear que incluye los relatos nominadores y ganadores de los Premios Nebula de este año. 

Ésta es su sinopsis:

The Nebula Awards Showcase volumes have been published annually since 1966, reprinting the winning and nominated stories of the Nebula Awards, voted on by the members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).

The editor of this year's volume, selected by SFWA s anthology Committee (chaired by Mike Resnick), is American science fiction and fantasy writer Greg Bear, author of over thirty novels, including the Nebula Award-winning Darwin s Radio and Moving Mars.

This anthology includes the winners of the Andre Norton, Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master, Rhysling, and Dwarf Stars Awards, as well as the Nebula Award winners, and features Ann Leckie, Nalo Hopkinson, Rachel Swirsky, Aliette de Bodard, and Vylar Kaftan, with additional articles and poems by authors such as Robin Wayne Bailey, Samuel R. Delany, Terry A. Garey, Deborah P Kolodji, and Andrew Robert Sutton.

Ésta es la sinopsis de Calendrical Regression:

In December of 2012, the Mayan calendar reached the end of its 13th baktun, completing the Long Count and signaling the end of the world... metaphorically. That was the day of Galactic First Contact, and the beginning of a new age for humans and aliens. Eighty years later, the Uary have come to Earth and want the Amazing Conroy to hypnotically regress the descendant of a Mayan priest and ask him a simple question about the end date of that ancient calendar: How did they know? There's just one problem. Another alien, a Svenkali, has dedicated its life to purging the galaxy of the Uary. It's tracked them do Earth and while it bungled one assassination attempt, it managed to steal Reggie, Conroy's buffalito, in the process. What's a hypnotist to do?
