Bundle: Sci-Fi Spectrum

Durante casi una semana más, se puede adquirir en StoryBundle, una colección de ebooks de ciencia ficción seleccionados por Joseph R. Lallo. De los contenidos, me parece especialmente interesante Terminal Mind, de David Walton (autor de Superposition), novela que en su día resultó ganadora del Premio Philip K. Dick.

Novedad: Supersymmetry, de David Walton

Hoy se pone a la venta Supersymmetry, la secuela de Superposition de David Walton. Ésta es su sinopsis:

Ryan Oronzi is a paranoid, neurotic, and brilliant physicist who has developed a quantum military technology that could make soldiers nearly invincible in the field. The technology, however, gives power to the quantum creature known as the varcolac, which slowly begins to manipulate Dr. Oronzi and take over his mind. Oronzi eventually becomes the unwilling pawn of the varcolac in its bid to control the world. 
The creature immediately starts attacking those responsible for defeating it fifteen years earlier, including Sandra and Alex Kelley—the two versions of Alessandra Kelley who are still living as separate people. The two young women must fight the varcolac, despite the fact that defeating it may mean resolving once again into a single person.

Superposition, de David Walton

Leer un libro podría ser considerado como una especie de medida cuántica. De hecho, hasta que abres el libro y lees la historia, está en una superposición de estados "me gusta"/"no me gusta". Por supuesto, la amplitud de esos estados no tiene por qué ser igual. Puedes tener experiencia previa con el trabajo del autor o haber leído reseñas (positivas o negativas) de gente con gustos similares al tuyo y eso puede hacer que un estado sea más probable que otro. Pero no colapsa definitivamente en uno concreto hasta que lo lees. 

En el caso de Superposition, de David Walton, prácticamente no tenía información para estimar cuáles podrían ser las probabilidades de los estados en mi caso. No había leído anteriormente nada escrito por el autor y aunque la sinopsis, que habla de asesinatos y física cuántica, parecía interesante, también sonaba a combinación arriesgada. Además, por alguna razón, yo suponía erróneamente que ésta era una novela juvenil (no lo es) y no me había percatado de que David Walton era el David Walton de Quintessence (que no he leído, pero que al menos me sonaba de oídas). Mi única oportunidad para hacer colapsar la función de onda era leer el libro y me alegro de haberlo hecho. Superposition ha resultado ser, como casi cualquier libro, una superposición de cosas buenas y no tan buenas, pero las buenas contribuyen mucho más a la combinación que las otras. 

La primera cosa que llama la atención de la novela es que está contada por medio de dos tramas paralelas que suceden prácticamente al mismo tiempo y en diferentes lugares, pero con el mismo protagonista. ¿Cómo puede ser esto? Explicarlo sería chivarse, pero es fácil deducir que las extrañas propiedades de las partículas cuánticas tienen algo que ver. De hecho, toda la ciencia de la novela está basada en sólidos principios físicos. Creer que tales cosas puedan suceder en el mundo macroscópico hace, en ocasiones, que se resienta bastante la suspensión de la incredulidad, pero los principios físicos están explicados con ejemplos claros y con un rigor admirable. Walton sabe de física cuántica y se nota. Además, y aunque no es precisamente el foco central de la trama, también hay algunas excelentes especulaciones sobre el libre albedrío, la consciencia y la inteligencia, y el autor expone algunas ideas realmente interesantes:
 "A dog is conscious, I think," Marek said.
"Or do we just say that, because the dog's programming is more complex, and we can't always predict it?" Brian said. "What about you? I grant you the label of 'conscious' because I ascribe intent and unpredictability to your actions, but when it comes down to it, you're just following your programming, too. 'Consciousness' is just when that programming becomes complex enough to warrant using certain vocabulary."  
Otra cosa que disfruté especialmente de la novela fue la parte del juicio al personaje principal. Esos capítulos son del estilo de series como La ley de Los Ángeles o Ley y orden y resultan muy entretenidos. Pero lo que realmente me gustó es la inteligencia con la que el autor los usa para explorar el pasado del protagonista, para explicar ciertas de las partes más extrañas de los conceptos físicos y para crear una atmósfera de misterio. Y, por supuesto, cómo se enlazan las ideas de prueba y duda razonable con conceptos de la mecánica cuántica y la incertidumbre. Un trabajo muy atractivo y que da que pensar:
The problem with the story was that it was mostly true, but not quite. All considering, I thought it was the best we could do, but it made me wonder how much of the trial system had to do with truth, and how much of it was a competition between the two opposing sides to see whose fiction was the more believable.
El protagonista principal es carismático, aunque quizá un poco demasiado perfecto para mi gusto. Algunos de los personajes secundarios, sin embargo, lo compensan con creces. Me gustaron Colin y, especialmente, Alessandra, cuyo conflicto interno la convierte en un personaje muy interesante de leer. El ritmo es casi perfecto, con un buen equilibrio entre las dos subtramas y algunos giros interesantes en el momento adecuado. Y el misterio me mantuvo interesado durante todo el trayecto que, por supuesto, es una de las mejores cosas que se pueden decir de una novela policíaca (cuántica o no).

Así que, como podéis ver, hay muchas cosas buenas en Superposition. Pero también hay algunos problemas que presentan amplitud no nula en la superposición cuántica que es la novela. Aunque la resolución es más o menos satisfactoria, me hubiera gustado un final no tan redondo. Algo más oscuro, no tan para todos los públicos. Yo tenía mi propia teoría (que involucraba motivos no tan generosos por partes de algunos de los personajes; yo también tengo mi propia superposición de pensamientos perversos y malévolos de vez en cuando). Además, me resulta muy difícil creer que en la novela la gente acepte con tan facilidad ciertos hechos extraordinarios y revolucionarios. Tampoco parece que afectaran al mundo en su globalidad, lo que es realmente improbable cuando se habla de este tipo de descubrimientos científicos.

A pesar de estos problemas, la amplitud de los elementos positivos de Superposition es significativamente mayor que la de los negativos, y recomiendo el libro si estáis buscando un misterio cuántico original, inteligente y con buen ritmo. Supersymmetry, también de David Walton y situado en el mismo mundo, saldrá a finales de año. Es muy probable que también lo intente colapsar.

Superposition, by David Walton

Reading a book could be considered as a kind of quantum measurement. In fact, until you open the book and read the story, it is in a superposition of "I like it"/"I don't like it" states. Of course, the amplitude of those states might not be equal. You may have prior experience with the author's work or have read (positive or negative) reviews by people with tastes similar to yours and that can make one state more likely than other. But it won't collapse to a definite one until you read it.   

In the case of Superposition, by David Walton, I had almost no information to estimate what the probabilities of each state could be for me. I had not read anything written by the author and while the synopsis seemed interesting, involving quantum physics and a murder, it was also a risky combination. Additionally, I had, for some reason, the completely wrong idea that this was a YA novel (it is not) and I hadn't noticed that David Walton was the David Walton that had written Quintessence (which I have not read, but at least knew about). My only chance to collapse the wave function was to read the book and I am glad that I did. Superposition turned out to be, as almost any book out there, a superposition of good and not-so-good things, but the good ones contribute to the combination much more than the others.  

The first thing that stands out about the novel is that it is told by means of two parallel plots that occur almost simultaneously, in different places but with the same protagonist. How is that possible? Explaining it would be telling, but it is easy to deduce that the weird properties of quantum particles have something to do with it. In fact, all the science in the novel is based on solid physical principles. Believing that they could occur in the macro-world is, sometimes, a bit of a strain of the suspension of disbelief, but the science is exposed with clear examples and admirable rigorousness. Walton really knows his quantum physics and it shows. Also, and though is not exactly central to the plot, there is some excellent speculation about free will, consciousness and intelligence, and the author makes some really interesting points:

Another thing that I enjoyed a lot in the novel was the part involving the trial of the main character. Those chapters read a bit like an episode from L.A. Law or Law & Order and are really entertaining. But what I liked the most is how cleverly the author uses them to explore the background of the protagonist, to explain some of the weird science and to create an atmosphere of mystery. And, of course, how the ideas of proof and reasonable doubt in Justice are linked to concepts of quantum mechanics such as uncertainty. Very compelling and thought-provoking work:

The main protagonist is likable, although a bit too perfect for my taste. Some of the secondary characters, however, more than make up for it. I liked Colin and, especially, Alessandra, whose internal conflict made her a very interesting character to read. The prose is not especially brilliant, but it flows very well, making the novel quite easy to follow. The pace is almost perfect, with a good balance between the two subplots and some interesting twists at exactly the right moment. And the mystery kept me interested all way through, which is, of course, one the best things that can be said about a whodunit (quantum or not).

So, as you see, there is plenty to like in Superposition. There is, however, some problems with non-zero amplitude in the quantum superposition that is the novel. Although the resolution is more or less satisfactory, I'd have preferred a not so neat ending. Something a bit more dark, not so family friendly. I had my own theory (that involved not so generous motives from some of the characters; I have my own superposition of perverse and evil thoughts now and then). Also, I find it hard to believe that the people in the novel accepted certain extraordinary and revolutionary facts so easily. They didn't seem to affect the world at large, either, which is really, really improbable when talking about this kind of scientific discoveries.

Despite these issues, the amplitude of the positive elements in Superposition is significantly greater than that of the negative ones, and I recommend reading it if you're looking for an original, intelligent, fast-paced quantum mystery. Supersymmetry, also by David Walton and set in the same world, is coming later this year. I'll probably be collapsing that one too.

Novedad: Superposition, de David Walton

Ayer se puso a la venta Superposition, una novela de David Walton. He tenido la oportunidad de leer el libro (que me ha gustado bastante) y pronto os ofreceré una reseña completa, pero podéis ya leer la opinión de mi buen amigo Xavi en el estupendo blog Dreams of Elvex.

Ésta es la sinopsis de la novela:
A QUANTUM PHYSICS MURDER MYSTERY. 
A Mind-Bending, Near-Future, Science Fiction Technothriller. 
Jacob Kelley's family is turned upside down when an old friend turns up, waving a gun and babbling about an alien quantum intelligence. The mystery deepens when the friend is found dead in an underground bunker…apparently murdered the night he appeared at Jacob's house. Jacob is arrested for the murder and put on trial.


As the details of the crime slowly come to light, the weave of reality becomes ever more tangled, twisted by a miraculous new technology and a quantum creature unconstrained by the normal limits of space and matter. With the help of his daughter, Alessandra, Jacob must find the true murderer before the creature destroys his family and everything he loves.
