Reseña de Vengeful, de V.E. Schwab

Parece increíble, pero ya han pasado más de cinco años de la publicación de Vicious, de V.E. Schwab, una de las mejores novelas de superhéroes que he leído. Y aunque el final de la historia deja los acontecimientos claramente preparados para una continuación, durante este tiempo nunca tuve demasiada esperanza de poder llegar a verla, sobre todo porque su autora se embarcó en otros varios proyectos distintos. Por ello, me llevé una sorpresa muy agradable cuando vi anunciado en Twitter que el lanzamiento de Vengeful era inminente. Sorpresa que, por supuesto, pronto dio paso a la incertidumbre: ¿sería esta segunda parte tan buena como la primera?

Me alegra mucho poder decir que Vengeful no sólo es tan buena como Vicious, sino que incluso la supera en varios aspectos. Schwab ha sabido mantener los mejores elementos de la primera novela de la serie, potenciándolos aún más en esta continuación. El resultado es una de las novelas que más he disfrutados en los últimos meses y, muy posiblemente, una de las imprescindibles del año. 

El primer aspecto en el que destaca Vengeful, como ya lo hiciera Vicious, es en los personajes. Unos personajes que se alejan de los clásicos superhéroes del cómic y nos muestran un lado infinitamente más oscuro de la (dudosa) fortuna de poseer poderes sobrehumanos. Schwab sabe presentarlos a todos con admirable profundidad, consiguiendo que resulten tan fascinantes como creíbles y profundizando especialmente en su psicología (que en algunos casos es de lo más retorcida). 

Si en Vicious teníamos a Victor y Eli como principales referentes, en Vengeful la autora incorpora, muy acertadamente, dos nuevas protagonistas que dan muchísimo juego: June y Marcella. De hecho, la novela empieza con un maravilloso capítulo de presentación de esta última y gran parte de la trama gira en torno a ambas. Esto supone un perfecto contrapunto para los capítulos dedicados a Eli y Victor, que además nos presentan aspectos de su personalidad que no pudimos ver en la primera novela y que son de lo más interesante (mención especial para los flashbacks a la infancia de Eli, que son extraordinarios). Si a esto le unimos un buen puñado de personajes secundarios muy bien escogidos, el resultado no puede ser otro que un elenco absolutamente extraordinario (no pun intended). 

La prosa de Schwab sigue siendo excepcional. Con apenas unas pocas frases, es capaz de dibujar completamente una ambientación, de definir magistralmente a un personaje. El tono es, simplemente, perfecto. Oscuro, retorcido, por momentos hasta vicioso, como demandan los personajes y las situaciones. La narración, además, fluye de maravilla. En muchos momentos me sorprendí a mí mismo asintiendo con la cabeza mientras escuchaba el audiolibro, porque, sí, esa era precisamente la frase necesaria en ese momento, la que mejor podía encajar con diferencia.       

La trama se resiente ligeramente de la importancia dada al tratamiento de los personajes y tarda un poco más en arrancar que en Vicious. Además, en la parte dedicada da Victor y Sydney, los continuos cambios de situación en el tiempo pueden llegar a confundir un tanto al lector. Sin embargo, esto constituyen sólo problemas menores en la novela, puesto que una vez que Schwab sitúa convenientemente todas la piezas en el tablero, las tramas empiezan a confluir y todo funciona de manera mucho más dinámica. Además, la ciudad de Merit se convierte en epicentro de toda la acción, una decisión muy acertada, puesto que poco a poco va cobrando una personalidad propia, al estilo de otras famosas ciudades del mundo de los superhéroes. Finalmente, y aunque algunas subtramas se resuelven, la historia queda de nuevo en un to be continued, esta vez incluso más pronunciado que en Vicious, por lo que espero que pasen mucho menos de cinco años antes de que se publique la siguiente entrega si es que quiero que mis uñas sobrevivan hasta entonces.

En resumen, Vengeful es una novela que me ha encantado, como creo que ha quedado de manifiesto. Si ya habéis leído Vicious, no os la podéis perder. Si no, esta nueva novela es una razón más para ponerse al día con esta serie cuanto antes. Además, tendréis una oportunidad inmejorable en marzo del año próximo, puesto que para entonces se ha anunciado la edición de Vicious en castellano con el título de Una obsesión perversa y de la mano de Ediciones Urano.

Un primer vistazo a A Darker Shade of Magic, de V.E. Schwab

En ocasiones he reseñado novelas sin terminar de leerlas, pero en todos los casos se trataba de libros que decidí no terminar porque no me estaban gustando nada. A Darker Side of Magic, de V.E. Schwab, por el contrario, es una novela que me gustaría mucho leer entera, pero que tuve que dejar en la página 130. ¿Por qué? Pues porque en mi emoción por conseguir la nueva obra de la autora de la fantástica Vicious (mi reseña) no me percaté de que no me ofrecían una copia de cortesía completa, sino solamente un avance.

En cualquier caso, tras mi decepción inicial (¡tenía tantas ganas de leer el libro!) decidí echarle un vistazo para al menos darme una idea inicial de cómo podía ser la novela. ¿Qué saqué en claro? Bueno, creo que en este caso 130 páginas no son suficientes para llegar a conclusiones sólidas, pero seguid leyendo si queréis conocer mis primeras impresiones.

La característica (posiblemente) más destacada y (seguramente) más interesante de estas primeras páginas es el universo en el que se sitúa la historia. Nos encontramos con un puñado de mundos paralelos y en cada uno de ellos hay una versión distinta de la ciudad de Londres. La magia está presente en todos ellos, pero su relevancia y el tratamiento que recibe varían de uno a otro. Esto está perfectamente explicado en los siguientes párrafos:

The maps were a remainder. The three canvases were tacked side by side, the sole decoration on the walls. From a distance, they could have passed for the same map - the same outline of the same island country - but up close, only the world London could be found on all three.

Grey London. Red London. White London. The map on the left was of Great Britain, from the English Channel up through the tips of Scotland, every facet rendered in detail. By contrast, the map on the right held almost none. Makt, the country called itself, the capital city held by the ruthless Dane twins, but the territory beyond was in constant flux. The map in the middle Kell knew best, for it was home. Arnes. The country's name was written in elegant script down the length of the island, though in truth, the land on which London stood was only the royal empire.

Three very different Londons, in three very different countries, and Kell was one of the only living souls to have seen them all. 

También se nos presenta a dos de los personajes que con total seguridad van a ser los protagonistas principales de la novela. Así, conocemos a Kell, el misterioso viajero entre los mundos y, en menor medida, también a Lila, la pequeña ratera que en realidad quiere ser pirata. Ambos son interesantes y es fácil identificarse con ellos pese a que están un poco estereotipados (Kell es otro huérfano con un pasado misterioso y un talento para la magia).

El libro es fácil de leer y de seguir, y la prosa fluye muy bien, pero el principio de la novela es un tanto lento (carece del arranque vertiginoso de Vicious) y el avance concluye justo cuando empiezan a suceder cosas interesantes. Por tanto, poco es lo que puedo comentar sobre la trama. Parece ser que el libro va a tener 400 páginas, con lo que he leído casi una tercera parte, pero ya el comienzo está prácticamente dedicado a introducir a los personajes y el escenario, todavía no está completamente claro cuál va a ser el foco de la historia. Hay algunos indicios, eso sí: la creciente tensión entre las distintas ciudades, el misterioso origen de Kell, los cambios progresivos en la naturaleza de la magia y el destino del desaparecido cuarto Londres (el Londres Negro) tendrán sin duda una vital importancia en el resto del libro.

Pero, ¿me ha gustado este avance? ¿Quiero leer la novela completa? ¿Pienso leerla cuando se publique? Respuesta breve: Sí. Sí. No lo sé. Respuesta larga: 1) Sí, me ha gustado bastante, pero no me ha entusiasmado tanto como el inicio de Vicious. 2) Sí, me gustaría saber qué les sucede a Kell, Lila y los cuatro Londres, aunque no es que haya perdido el sueño por la intriga. 3) No sé si me compraré la novela cuando salga. El precio del ebook en Amazon España en este momento es de 12,99€ (y unos escalofríantes 17,29€ en Kobo). O, como parece que se suelen medir los ebooks, unos 13 cafés al precio que están donde yo vivo. Bastante más de lo que normalmente estoy dispuesto a pagar por un libro digital. Y, lo que es aún peor, hay una edición en papel (de una editorial diferente) que se ofrece por 10,13€. Por toda una serie de motivos no puedo comprar más libros impresos, creo que tendré que esperar a finalizar A Darker Shade of Magic cuando el precio del ebook sea más asequible.

Nota: Desde que escribí esta reseña se ha anunciado una nueva edición en ebook al precio, mucho más razonable, de 5,91€ (y que, además, se publicará antes que la otra). Ésa sí creo que la compraré.

A Darker Side of Magic, by V.E. Schwab (a Sneak Peek)

In the past, I have reviewed novels which I had not read in their entirety, but in each and every case they were books that I chose not to finish because I wasn't enjoying them at all. A Darker Side of Magic, by V.E. Schwab, on the other hand, is a novel I'd very much like to read completely, but I had to stop at page 130. Why? Because in my excitement to get the new novel by the author of the wonderful Vicious (review in Spanish here) I didn't realize I was not getting an ARC of the full novel but only a sneak peek.

Anyway, after my initial disappointment (I wanted the book so bad!) I decided to give it a try and at least get an initial idea of what the novel is like. What did I learn? Well, I think that in this case 130 pages are too little to reach solid conclusions, but keep on reading if you want to know what my first impressions are. 

The (possibly) most prominent and (surely) most interesting feature of these few first pages is the universe in which the story is set in. We find a handful of parallel worlds and in all of them there exists a different version of London. There is magic in all of them, but the relevance and treatment it receives varies greatly from one to another. This is perfectly explained in the following paragraphs:

We are also introduced to the two characters that will most likely be the main protagonists of the novel. We get to know Kell, the mysterious traveller between worlds, and, to a lesser extent, also Lila, the petty thief that wants to be a pirate. They are both interesting and very likable characters, though slightly clichéd (Kell is yet another orphan with a mysterious past and a talent for magic).

The book is easy to read and to follow, and the prose flows very well, but the beginning of the novel is a bit slow (it lacks the gripping pace of Vicious) and the excerpt ended just when interesting things were beginning to happen. Thus, I can comment little on the plot. It seems that the book will have 400 pages, meaning that I've read almost a third of it, but since it was mostly devoted to introducing the characters and the setting it is still not completely clear what the main focus of the story will be. There are some clues, though: the growing tension between the different cities, the mystery of the origin of Kell, the progressive changes in the nature of magic and the fate of the disappeared fourth London (the Black one) will most surely be of great importance later in the book.

So, did I like this sneak peek? Do I want to read the whole novel? Will I be reading it when it comes out? Short answers: Yes. Yes. I don't know. Long answers: 1) Yes, I quite liked it, but I was not really blown away as I was with the beginning of Vicious. 2) Yes, I'd like to know what happens with Kell, Lila and the four Londons though I'm not exactly holding my breath. 3) I don't know if I will be buying the novel when it comes out. The list price of the ebook at Amazon Spain at the moment is €12.99 (and a staggering €17.29 at Kobo Spain). That is more than $15 (more than $20 at Kobo) or, as ebooks seem to be usually measured, about 13 cups of coffee where I live. Way more than I am usually willing to pay for an ebook. And even worse, there is a print edition (from a different publisher) with a list price of €10.13. Since I can't buy print books for a number of reasons, I think I will wait to finish reading A Darker Shade of Magic until the price of the ebook gets lower.

Note: After I wrote this review, a new ebook edition was announced, and its price is much more reasonable (€5.91). That I think I will be buying.

Vicious, de V.E. Schwab

Vicious es la primera novela de V.E. Schwab (también conocida como Victoria Schwab) dirigida al público adulto, tras haber publicado unas cuantas obras de carácter juvenil. También es uno de los libros de los que más y mejor se habló el año pasado, y por motivos más que sobrados.

En Vicious Schwab cuenta una historia de superhéroes, temática que últimamente parece estar especialmente de moda en el mundillo literario (sin ir más lejos, el año pasado también se publicaron Steelheart de Brandon Sanderson y The Violent Century de Lavie Tidhar, por citar dos de los ejemplos más destacados). Sin embargo, Vicious no es una historia de superhéroes típica como podía ser la entretenidísima Muy pronto seré invencible de Austin Grossman.

La autora elige acertadamente alejarse de algunas de las convenciones del género (nada de trajes de spandex, capitas o calzoncillos por encima de los pantalones) mientras que reutiliza otras y reconoce sus fuentes de inspiración con dosificados guiños al lector. De este modo, consigue huir del maniqueísmo para lograr el que es uno de los mayores aciertos de la novela: un desarrollo de personajes con más grises que blancos o negros puros, con muchísima ambigüedad moral y que es imposible clasificar como héroes o villanos porque tienen un poco de los dos (pese a lo que pueda parecer en un principio). En ese sentido, una comparación que creo que es especialmente iluminadora es que Vicious es al género superheróico lo que The Magicians (Los magos) de Lev Grossman (hermano gemelo, por cierto, de Austin Grossman) fue a la temática de las escuela de magia. 

La primera parte de la novela es prácticamente perfecta. La obligatoria narración del origen de los ExtraOrdinaries (nombre que reciben en el libro las personas con poderes especiales), contada mediante flashbacks, se intercala de manera magistral con pequeñas escenas que suceden en el presente, de forma que ambas líneas temporales se iluminan mutuamente con cada nuevo capítulo. La tensión crece con cada nueva revelación y durante este tramo inicial es casi imposible dejar de leer. Además, los personajes secundarios se van presentando con pequeños fragmentos que resultan tan interesantes como la línea narrativa principal, un poco al estilo de lo hecho por Lauren Beukes en The Shining Girls (Las luminosas). Una buena muestra de ello es el estupendo relato "Warm Up", disponible de forma gratuita online, que da una buena idea del estilo de Schwab en Vicious, pero que casi recomiendo leer tras la novela porque tiene un par de elementos que podrían ser considerados como spoilers. 

En el tercio final, Vicious se vuelve un poco más convencional y pierde un poco de fuelle, precisamente porque deja de lado el desarrollo de personajes. Aún así, el final es más que satisfactorio y queda suficientemente cerrado para que la novela se puede leer de forma independiente y suficientemente abierto como para que se puedan escribir secuelas (cosa que espero que se materialice, aunque no hay nada anunciado) sin necesidad de realizar piruetas.

En definitiva, un libro más que recomendable, con un esmeradísimo tratamiento de los personajes, una prosa directa y precisa, casi quirúrgica, y una trama interesante y bien cerrada. Os animo a leerlo y disfrutarlo tanto si sois fans de los superhéroes como si no.
