Cuando era más joven, pasaba horas y horas jugando a videojuegos. De hecho, la primera cosa que hice tras terminar el último examen en la Universidad fue pasarme media noche jugando a X-COM: Terror from the Deep. Ahora ya no tengo ni el tiempo ni la energía necesarios para jugar, pero sigo muy interesado en toda la cultura pop que rodea al mundo de los videojuegos y me vi inmediatamente atraído por Press Start to Play, una antología de relatos de ciencia ficción centrados en ese tema.

John Joseph Adams y Daniel H. Wilson han construido una muy sólida colección de cuentos, tanto en  lo que se refiere a historias originales como las que han elegido reeditar. Por ejemplo, en el libro se encuentra "Anda's Game", de Cory Doctorow, que es ya casi un clásico, junto con nuevos cuentos de autores como Charles Yu, Charlie Jane Anders, Austin Grossman o Yoon Ha Lee. 

Hay una gran variedad de intereses y enfoques a lo largo de la antología, pero me ha gustado descubrir una serie de temas compartidos por muchas de las historias incluidas en el libro. La primera es la idea de que los videojuegos puedas invadir, de algún modo, la vida real. Muchos de los autores exploran la frontera existente entre los juegos y la realidad, una frontera que a veces se difumina o incluso desaparece como, por ejemplo, en relatos como "Desert Walk", de S.R. Mastrantone, "NPC", de Charles Yu, "REAL", de Django Wexler, "Respawn", de Hiroshi Sakuraza o mi favorito del libro: "Save Me Plz", de David Barr Kirtley, una excelente historia que incluso introduce algunos elementos de fantasía épica.

Una variación muy interesante del tropo de videojuegos-que-se-funden-con-la-realidad es el estudio de cómo los juegos electrónicos afectan a nuestras relaciones con amigos y familia. Éste es el foco de cuentos como "All of the People in Your Party Have Died", de Robin Wasserman, "Coma Kings", de Jessica Barber, el muy valiente "Please Continue", de Chris Kluwe, la deliciosa historia juvenil "1UP", de Holly Black, y la super dulce "Rat Catcher's Yellow", de Charlie Jane Anders, una de las mejores historias de amor que he leído últimamente.

También me ha sorprendido gratamente encontrarme que varias historias incluyen algunos de mis elementos favoritos de la cultura de los videojuegos, a pesar de que no son de los más populares y suelen quedar relegados en favor de otros más llamativos. Por ejemplo, las aventuras conversacionales son el tema de relatos como "The Clockwork Soldier", de Ken Liu, y "end game", by Chris Avellone. Además, me ha gustado mucho como las leyendas urbanas sobre juegos secretos aparecen en "Killswitch", de Catherynne M. Valente, y, especialmente, en "Desert Walk", de S.R. Mastrantone, que consigue de forma magistral crear una atmósfera que es a la vez ominosa y fascinante.

En resumen,  Press Start to Play es una muy buena antología con historias de gran calidad media y sólo un puñado de cuentos flojos ("Twarrior", de Andy Weir, es particularmente malo) y recomiendo su lectura. Incluso si no estáis muy metidos en el mundo de los videojuegos, hay muchísimas cosas que disfrutar en este libro.

When I was younger, I used to spend a lot of time playing videogames. In fact, the first thing I did after my last exam at the University was to spend half the night playing X-COM: Terror from the Deep. Now, I have nor the time neither the energy to play anymore, but I am still very interested in all the pop culture originated around videogames and I was immediately attracted to Press Start to Play, an anthology of science fiction short stories focused on electronic gaming. 

John Joseph Adams and Daniel H. Wilson have assembled a very solid collection of both original stories and reprints. For instance, in the book you will find "Anda's Game", by Cory Doctorow, which is almost a classic now, together with new tales by authors such as Charles Yu, Charlie Jane Anders, Austin Grossman or Yoon Ha Lee. 

There is a quite a variety of topics and approaches throughout the anthology, but I was pleased to find a couple of themes that are shared by many of the stories included in the book. The first one is the idea of videogames invading, somehow, real life. Many of the authors explore the frontier between games and reality, a frontier that sometimes blurs and even disappears as, for instance, in stories such as "Desert Walk", by S.R. Mastrantone, "NPC", by Charles Yu, "REAL", by Django Wexler, "Respawn", by Hiroshi Sakuraza or my favorite in the book: "Save Me Plz", by David Barr Kirtley, an excellent story which also throws some epic fantasy elements into the mix. 

A very interesting variation of the games-merge-with-reality trope is the exploration of how videogames affect our relationships with our friends and family. This is addressed in stories such as "All of the People in Your Party Have Died", by Robin Wasserman, "Coma Kings", by Jessica Barber, the very courageous "Please Continue", by Chris Kluwe, the lovely YA "1UP", by Holly Black, and the super sweet "Rat Catcher's Yellow", by Charlie Jane Anders, one of the best and more thought-provoking love stories that I've read lately. 

I was also pleasantly surprised to find that some of the stories include some of the elements that I like the most about videogame culture, but that are not that popular and are sometimes forgotten. For instance, text-based adventures are the topic of stories such as "The Clockwork Soldier", by Ken Liu, and "end game", by Chris Avellone. Also, I enjoyed a lot how the urban legends about secret games are used in "Killswitch", by Catherynne M. Valente, and, especially, in "Desert Walk", by S.R. Mastrantone, which does a superb job of creating an atmosphere that is equally ominous and fascinating. 

All in all, Press Start to Play is a very good anthology with stories of a great average quality and only a handful of weaker ones ("Twarrior", by Andy Weir, is especially bad) and I recommend it. Even if you are not that much into videogames, you will find plenty of things to like in this book.

Crowdfunding: Women Destroy Science Fiction

Women Destroy Science Fiction es un número especial de la revista Lightspeed, editada por John Joseph Adams, que está siendo financiado mediante un proyecto de crowdfunding. Este número, que será editado por Christie Yant, tendrá una longitud algo superior a lo que es habitual en la revista e incluirá solamente historias escritas por mujeres (de ahí el título de la misma), entre las cuales ya se ha confirmado la presencia de Seanan McGuire y Maria Dahvana Headley.

Además, como la recaudación ha superado la cifra de 25.000$, se editará también un número especial escrito sólo por mujeres de Nightmare, revista hermana de Lightspeed pero dedicada al terror, que será dirigido por Ellen Datlow. Si se alcanzara la cifra de 35.000$ habría un tercer número especial de similares características, esta vez de la desaparecida revista Fantasy y editado por Cat Rambo.  

Si queréis participar en esta interesante iniciativa, aún tenéis una semana para hacerlo.

Crowdfunding para antología de John Joseph Adams

Hasta final de este mes se puede contribuir al crowdfunding que el editor John Josep Adams ha lanzado en Kickstarter para su antología HELP FUND MY ROBOT ARMY!!! & Other Improbable Kickstarters. El proyecto, además de incluir a autores tan interesantes como Tim Pratt, Chuck Wendig o Mur Lafferty, tiene la particularidad de que sus historias seguirán un formato muy especial: todas ellas tendrán la forma de una propuesta de proyecto de crowdfunding. ¡Eso sí que es meta referencialidad! Un ejemplo de relato de este tipo (y, en realidad, el que sirvió como germen del proyecto) se puede leer de forma gratuita en el número de este mismo mes de la revista Lightspeed. 

Aunque aún faltan tres días para que se cierre el plazo, el proyecto ya ha recibido financiación suficiente como para garantizar su realización. Las recompensas, además del libro en sí, incluyen también otras antologías y número de revistas editadas por John Joseph Adams. 

Últimos días para votar en los Premios Locus

El próximo lunes se cerrará el plazo para votar en los Premios Locus. Estos galadornes se otorgan por votación popular y abierta a todo el mundo. Para votar, es suficiente cubrir el formulario online en la página de la revista Locus, sin que sea necesario registrarse previamente o ser subscriptor de la revista (aunque, de serlo, el voto tiene valor doble).

Mis recomendaciones para estos premios son las mismas que en su día propuse para los Premios Hugo, tanto en la categoría de novela como en las de ficción corta. Además, puesto en que los Locus hay una categoría de antología, me permito también recomendar Edge of Infinity editada por Jonathan Strahan y Other Worlds Than These editada por John Joseph Adams. 

Os animo a que participéis en la fiesta de la democracia en la elección de vuestras obras de ciencia ficción y fantasía favoritas de 2012.

Ebooks promocionales para votantes de los Premios Hugo

Como anunciamos aquí mismo hace poco, el periodo de nominación para los Premios Hugo de este año ya está abierto. Como es habitual, muchos autores y editores están publicando información sobre cuáles de sus trabajos son susceptibles de ser elegidos para estos galadornes. Además, algunos de ellos están ofreciendo versiones electrónicas promocionales de sus obras a los votantes de los Hugo de forma gratuita.

Por ejemplo, John Joseph Adams ofrece copias de sus antologías Armored (reseñada aquí) y Under the Moons of Mars así como de los contenidos de las revistas Lightspeed y Nightmare. Jeff Salyards ofrece copias digitales de su estupenda novela Scourge of the Betrayer (mención especial de Sense of Wonder en 2012 y reseñada aquí). Bradley P. Beaulieu regala The Straits of Galahesh, segunda parte de The Winds of Khalakovo (os recuerdo que otra forma de conseguir esos dos ebooks es participar en el proyecto de crowdfunding de Beaulieu). Y Brandon Sanderson regala copias de la maravillosa novela corta The Emperor's Soul. 

En casi todos los casos es necesario aportar alguna prueba de ser votante registrado de los Premios Hugo. Si no sabéis cómo participar (y por qué es una experiencia que recomiendo totalmente) echadle un vistazo a esta entrada.

Una obra que ha sido calificada por Manuel de los Reyes como "una colección poco menos que imprescindible, digna de ocupar un lugar destacado en nuestras estanterías" y que ahora tiene aún más motivos para serlo. Other Worlds Than These editada por John Joseph Adams

Other Worlds Than These es una antología de relatos de ciencia ficción y fantasía editada por John Joseph Adams. Todas las historias giran en torno al tema de los universos paralelos y los portales a otros mundos, algo que me gusta especialmente. Así que tenía muchas esperanzas puestas en este libro. Y me alegra decir que no me ha defraudado en absoluto.

Uno de los puntos más destacables de Other Worlds Than These es que es extremadamente variado. Adams decidió, muy acertadamente, incluir tanto historias de fantasía como de ciencia ficción y eso contribuye enormemente al disfrute global del libro. En estos relatos encontramos un espectro muy amplio de métodos para viajar de un o universo a otro: desde aparatos mecánico-cuánticos a puertas mágicas, con todas las posibilidades intermedias. En ese aspecto el libro alcanza un éxito total y resulta absolutamente satisfactorio.

Pero una antología se queda en nada si no tiene buenas historia y Other Worlds Than These tiene unas cuantas que son excelentes. A Brief Guide to Other Histories de Paul McAuley, Ten Sigmas de Paul Melko, [A Ghost Samba] de Ian McDonald, Mrs. Todd's Shortcut de Stephen King y The Lonely Songs of Laren Door de George R.R. Martin, por ejemplo, son excepcionales y hacen que el libro merezca la pena sólo por ellas. Y luego tenemos la mejor de todas: Impossible Dreams de Tim Pratt. Cuando el libro fue anunciado, pensé inmediatamente que la historia de Pratt tenía que estar incluida y me alegro de que Adams haya pensado lo mismo. Es uno de mis relatos favoritos de todos los tiempos y lo recomiendo totalmente (se puede leer gratuitamente en inglés, por cierto, como extracto de la antología). Oh, y no os olvidéis de ver el corto que Shir Comay rodó basándose en la historia de Pratt. También es maravilloso.   

Por supuesto, también hay algunos relatos que no me gustaron tanto o que pienso que no encajan totalmente en el libro. Por ejemplo, disfruté mucho con Magic for Begginers de Kelly Link pero o la leí mal o hay que hacer un gran esfuerzo de imaginación para considerarla como fantasía con portales a otros mundos. Algo similar sucede con The Rose Wall de Joyce Carol Oates, una historia que yo ni siquiera clasificaría como fantasía. En lugar de estos relatos yo hubiera incluido Between the Lines (Entre líneas) del autor español José Antonio Cotrina. Esta estupenda historias fue recogida en la antología The SFWA European Hall of Fame (editada por James y Kathryn Morrow) y hubiera sido una excelente incorporación a Other Worlds Than These. Y, por supuesto, me sorprendió mucho que no se incluyera ninguna historia de Greg Egan: Singleton, El asesino infinito y Dark Integers, por ejemplo, son de las mejores historias sobre universos paralelos que se pueden encontrar. Quizá si alguna vez hay una segunda parte de Other Worlds Than These...

Teniéndolo todo en cuenta, Other Worlds Than These es una de las mejores antologías de ciencia ficción y fantasía publicadas este año y la recomiendo firmemente. Y no quisiera terminar esta reseña sin mencionar la asombrosa portada de Cody Tilson: no puedo pensar en una forma mejor y más evocadora de reflejar lo que encontraréis dentro de este libro.
